WBI EPS ™ panel should be installed with an approved adhesive with a vapor retarding characteristic after being checked for flatness and tested for moisture content. The contractor shall make a test of the bond of the foam to concrete and let it cure to confirm there is a good bond to concrete. Extra security for the bond shall be provided by using a minimum of 4 anchors as shown below or eight anchors per board in damaged or poorly bonded concrete in the pattern shown below.
These anchors also ensure that the EPS panel stays in place while the adhesive dries. Cut nails, Tapcons, and Simpson Titan anchors of appropriate length may be used. Of these cut nails and Titen Anchors seem to be the fastest and preferred by contractors. Titen anchors have carbide infused threads and with the proper holes size and depth go in easily and have great holding power.
We recommend using Simpson Strong Tie Titen HD Counter Sink head screws because they have carbide treated threads with lower friction. Tapcons or cut nails of similar size may also be used. To use a Titen HD Anchor: Use a drill bit the same diameter as the nominal diameter of the anchor to be installed. Drill the hole to the specified embedment depth plus minimum hole depth over drill (see information below) to allow the thread tapping dust to settle, and blow it clean using compressed air.
Alternatively, drill the hole deep enough to accommodate embedment depth and the dust from drilling and tapping. This is usually a min 1/2” extra, but you will have to test for the right depth. Countersink the hole, then insert the anchor through the EPS panel and into the hole. Tighten the anchor into the concrete until the screw head is flush with the aluminum layer. Use the slowest setting on the impact drill for the last portion of setting the anchor.
The minimum number of 5 anchors for well bonded EPS panels on concrete in good condition. The number of anchors should be increased to 8 if bond or quality of concrete has been degraded.
EPS Wall Panels for Vertical Installations
When extending radiant heating or insulation projects to walls, EPS wall panels are an ideal choice due to their thermal performance and ease of handling. Proper installation of EPS wall panels requires surface preparation and verified bonding, especially when adhered to concrete substrates.
Just like flooring applications, the vertical concrete surface should be flat, free of contaminants, and tested for moisture content. Using construction adhesive and appropriate mechanical anchors ensures long-term durability of the system.
EPS Panel Installation Tips
Precision is critical for a successful EPS panel installation. Panels should be dry-fitted and trimmed where necessary before applying adhesive. Ensure even pressure is applied during adhesion and use mechanical fasteners in accordance with manufacturer guidelines.
To optimize performance and avoid air pockets, especially on uneven surfaces, always consider pre-treating the concrete with a bonding agent before EPS panel installation. Allow time for adhesive to cure before loading the surface with flooring or other coverings.
Installing EPS Panels Over Concrete in Radiant Systems
Installing EPS panels over concrete is especially effective in radiant floor systems, offering high insulation value while maintaining structural support. For optimal thermal efficiency, panel seams should be tightly butted, and any gaps filled with expanding foam or suitable sealants.
Before installing EPS panels over concrete, verify that all environmental and load-bearing requirements are met. Pay attention to edge conditions and plan for expansion joints where necessary, particularly in large or irregularly shaped rooms.
EPS Wall Panel Installation in Remodels
In retrofit or remodeling projects, EPS wall panel installation offers a fast and efficient insulation upgrade. Panels can be easily cut to fit around outlets and framing. When paired with a radiant heating system, these wall panels enhance thermal efficiency and improve indoor comfort levels.
