Installing Linoleum Flooring Over Radiant Heat

Linoleum flooring, combined with radiant heat, offers an eco-friendly, energy-efficient solution for consistent warmth and comfort. Explore how to install and maintain this combination to ensure long-lasting performance.

1. Subfloor Preparation
   Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level to provide a stable base for the radiant heating panels and linoleum flooring.
2. Radiant Heating Panel Installation
   Place WBI’s radiant heating panels over the prepared subfloor, ensuring they are securely fastened as per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
   
3. Underlayment Application
   Apply a Suitable Underlayment: Install a 1/4″ to 1/2″ plywood or OSB underlayment over the radiant panels. This layer provides a stable base for the linoleum and helps in heat distribution.
4. Linoleum Flooring Installation
   Adhere Linoleum Flooring: Use a recommended adhesive to install the linoleum flooring over the underlayment. Ensure the adhesive is compatible with both the linoleum and the radiant heating system.
5. Temperature Control
   Maintain Safe Temperatures: Set the radiant heating system to maintain a surface temperature not exceeding 85°F (29°C) to prevent damage to the linoleum flooring.
6. Acclimation Period
   Allow Acclimation: Before installation, allow the linoleum flooring to acclimate to the room’s temperature and humidity for at least 48 hours to prevent expansion or contraction after installation.

Important Notes on Heated Linoleum Flooring

When installing linoleum over radiant heat, it’s crucial to maintain the right balance of temperature and humidity. Excessive heat can cause linoleum to warp, discolor, or even crack, while humidity can cause expansion and contraction of the material.

To avoid these issues, ensure the radiant heating system never exceeds 85°F (29°C) and keep the room’s humidity levels stable between 40%-60%. Additionally, it’s essential to leave proper expansion gaps around the perimeter of the flooring to allow for natural movement.

Following these guidelines ensures your radiant heated linoleum floors will stay intact and perform optimally for years to come.
